Having an OLAP cube can be a real advantage especially for analysts and business users. The slice and dice capability allows quick results and easy investigation process.
For those of you who are familiar with Analysis Services OLAP cube, you probably know it is not a walk in the park to validate the data correctness of cube.
I have seen many cases of manual validation and it is not a pretty sight
If you ask yourself what kind of data validation a cube needs so here are some ideas of common cases where our client use it:
1. Compare relation DB (like DWH or DM) to Cube and make sure the numbers are the same.
2. Compare cube to another cube in order to make impact analysis before or after deployment to a new environment.
3. Compare the same cube over time to check data correctness between one period to another. i.e. The month before I had X sales, therefore I expect to have the same amount of sales in this month.
In the past few months I had several challenges to compare results between different data sources and OLAP cube. Fortunately I had Quality Gates to assist with this task, otherwise it would have taken triple the time!!
Quality Gates comes with the OLAP connector out of the box and support all Microsoft version including the 2012.
So if you are an OLAP fan it is strongly recommended to try it out!
